Celiac Disease and Infertility
About Kelly Brogan
KELLY BROGAN, MD, is a holistic psychiatrist, author of the New York Times Bestselling book, A Mind of Your Own, Own Your Self, the children’s book, A Time For Rain, and co-editor of the landmark textbook Integrative Therapies for Depression.
A number of European and two American studies have demonstrated a relationship between celiac disease and infertility. In 188 infertile women, 5.9% of those presenting with unexplained infertility had undiagnosed celiac by antibodies.
- Antibodies tested for celiac screening represent only one type of several gliadin peptides, and transglutaminase enzymes (meaning there are many undiagnosed but still wheat-reactive).
- If you are struggling with infertility, I strongly recommend elimination of gluten and cross-reactants like dairy and corn.
- Even if you are not struggling with infertility, but planning a pregnancy, consider elimination of grains to minimize local and systemic inflammation and sugar imbalance.
